Synthetisch erzeugtes Kryolith findet Verwendung in der Hülle von Schweißelektroden, allgemein als Flussmittel und als sogenannte schleifaktive Substanz in Kunstharz-gebundenen Schleifmittel und in Schleifmitteln auf Unterlagen.
Kryolith S ist ein eher selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der Halogenide. Es kristallisiert im monoklinen Kristallsystem mit der vereinfachten chemischen Zusammensetzung Na3[AlF6][2] und entwickelt entweder pseudokubische Kristalle oder massige Aggregate in weißer, brauner, grauer, braun-schwarzer oder rötlicher Farbe.
